Born in an agriculturist family, Shripal Sabnis (birth 1950) studied literature and chose an academic career. While rising to become the Principal of a college in North Maharashtra, he also established a reputation as a literary critic and a progressive and rationalist thinker.

Dr. Sabnis was elected president of the 89th All India Marathi Literary Conference. His speech received great acclaim for its bold approach of inclusivity of different literary currents and stout defence of secularism. He has written over 30 books.
